We Are Dust And Shadows

Marco Abrate & Linlu Zhang

2026年5月10日下午3时,「我们是尘埃和影子|We Are Dust And Shadows」——Marco & Linlu双个展于南希画廊(艺河湾艺术区)开幕。

On May 10, 2026, at 3 p.m., We Are Dust and Shadows — a duo project by Marco Abrate and Linlu — opened at Nancy’s Gallery, Art Flow. The exhibition presents the artists’ recent works: Linlu explores subtle traces of time and material through steel, cement, plaster, and tea leaves; Marco Abrate engages old doors, rice paper, and cement to create poetic perceptual spaces between the visible and invisible. The works include series such as Thresholds, White Memories, and Passing Shadows.

Nancy, director of Nancy's Gallery, welcomed the guests, presenting We Are Dust and Shadows as more than a double-solo exhibition—a meditation on the “visible and the invisible.” Linlu (Zhang Linlu) and Marco Abrate, each in their own language, explore subtle, inexpressible experiences. In a fast-paced, noisy world, their works offer a return to the inner self and the essence of connection, bridging the “emptiness” of Eastern philosophy with Western reflections on perception and existence. Nancy emphasized that young artists deserve sustained support, and that the gallery’s mission is to bring thoughtful, sincere works into the public eye.

Mr. Yin Antai, Chairman of Art Flow and Director of Tai Art Museum, reflected on his ongoing support for young artists since 2018, acknowledging the perseverance and dedication that the artistic journey demands. In today’s ever-changing environment, he emphasized the importance of “long-term vision,” reminding us that truly enduring cultural achievements unfold gradually over time. With the steady growth of Chinese society and economy, he believes the horizon for art and culture is expanding ever wider. He concluded with a note of encouragement: may all who work in the arts remain steadfast, nurturing their practice with patience and commitment.

Dr. Yu Mengqun observed that Marco and Linlu’s works delve into profound themes of identity and cross-cultural experience. Marco, though Italian, imbues his work with a subtle Eastern sensibility; Linlu, through her nuanced handling of materials, evokes a quiet meditation on perception and lived experience.Rather than relying on fixed language, the artists leave “asemic” traces that gesture toward the ineffable realms of the psyche. Their works cannot be simply read—they must be felt, intuited, and experienced. Dr. Yu further reflected that this is far from an “end of art” moment; it is, in fact, a time to patiently discover and nurture emerging artists whose potential will sustain the future of the artistic ecosystem.

Marco Abrate

Marco Abrate expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to present his work in Shanghai and acknowledged the institutions, curators, and collaborators who contributed to the exhibition.

His research investigates the unstable boundary between perception and projection through the phenomenon of pareidolia, the human tendency to recognize latent images within matter, textures, and traces. Working with surfaces marked by time, dust, cracks, plaster, wood, and erosion. Abrate constructs conditions in which figures emerge gradually, suspended between presence and disappearance.

At the center of the exhibition is the concept of the “Threshold”: not simply as an architectural element, but as a perceptual space between visible and invisible, memory and imagination, absence and recognition. Through this idea, the exhibition reflects on how images are formed, interpreted, and culturally translated.

Referencing both Western contemporary thought and Eastern philosophy, Abrate evokes Laozi’s idea that what is absent or empty often carries the deepest meaning. Rather than presenting fixed narratives, the works invite viewers into a slower process of observation, where meaning emerges through uncertainty, distance, and perception.

In her remarks, Linlu reflected that her practice has always been intertwined with language, yet it eludes full articulation. For her, creation is a form of silent dialogue—those sensations that cannot be immediately expressed are gradually preserved through traces, repetition, layering, and the passage of time.

She observed that while audiences often seek to decode artworks through language, what they truly long for is not a definitive answer, but a glimpse into the artist’s mode of perceiving the world and the authentic state in which creation unfolds. Many essential experiences—of memory, sensation, and the body—cannot be fully translated.

Thus, art is not about “explaining,” but about making the ineffable perceptible anew. Linlu hopes that viewers, through engagement with the materials, surfaces, and subtle details of her work, may encounter experiences and memories uniquely their own.

About the Artist

Marco Abrate (artist name: Rebor)

Born in 1996, Marco Abrate (artist name: Rebor) is an internationally active visual artist. His practice unfolds between sculptural painting, installation, and digital languages. The core of his research is  pareidolia: a perceptual and imaginative process through which he unveils presences and forms within matter. The wall as a surface that reveals hidden images.

Through this visual device, Abrate explores in depth themes such as love, mourning, loss, transformation, and the tension between presence and absence. Pareidolia, combined with fragile surfaces and crumbling plaster, becomes for the artist a tool of resistance against the rigidity of the image in the digital age. His work has been examined by art critic Giorgio Bonomi, who wrote the curatorial text for his first solo exhibition in Milan in 2020.

Linlu Zhang

Linlu Zhang (b. 1996) is a contemporary artist active between London and Shanghai, who graduated from the Royal College of Art in the UK. Her practice spans printmaking, installation, and cross-media approaches. Through a long-term research focus on asemic writing, she utilizes the physical act of writing, the transformation of materials, and the traces of time as mediums to carry memory and potential communication.

Her artistic methodology is centered on asemic writing, bringing perception and emotion to the forefront of her work. In her creations, memories are not directly represented but rather transformed into material forms, prompting the viewer to reflect on how meaning is generated. By stripping away legible textual information, her works no longer rely on the "comprehension of content"; instead, they directly impact the audience through cultural, visual, and somatic experiences. Its primary focus is no longer legibility, but rather inviting viewers to experience the relationship between humanity and language, actively participating in the process of generating meaning.
